Liverpool chief executive Peter Moore has suggested to Sky Sports that the club are open to bringing in some new signings in January.

What's the word?

Usually, it is rare for clubs to bring in high-profile players in the middle of the season, but Liverpool have done it before.

The Reds recruited Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez in January 2011, and the latter certainly went on to make a name for himself in the world of football.

While speaking to Sky Sports, Moore did not speak about specific targets, but he claimed that the club are willing to strengthen Jurgen Klopp's team.

"The investments are being made and it's hard to knock what you're seeing on the field now and say: 'Oh, you should be spending more money.' What I will say, because I know you are leading up to the question about January, the club continues to look at acquisitions that will strengthen the squad."

Who should the Reds move for?

One player who seemed to be linked to the Merseyside outfit on a daily basis was Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk.

At the moment, Liverpool are in scintillating form having gone unbeaten in their last nine games in all competitions.

In fact, the team have scored 15 goals in their last three games in all competitions.

There has never been a problem with Klopp's attacking stars, but the defence has at times been in disarray.

While the issue is not simply down to not having good enough centre-backs - the lack of protection in front of the back line is worth noting - the Reds would be boosted by the signing of Van Dijk.

The Dutchman is currently playing Premier League football with Southampton, therefore he would not need a settling in period.

Plus, there were widespread indications that Van Dijk wanted to move to Anfield, so if Liverpool fork up the cash, a deal is worth doing.
