In Focus: Seri can help improve defensive performance of Liverpool midfield

As reported by The Sun, Liverpool are leading the race to sign highly-rated Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri in this summer’s transfer window, potentially replacing Emre Can.

What’s the story?

With Can still having not signed a new contract, the chances of him leaving the club on a free transfer at the end of the season seem high, meaning the Reds could do with an effective and elite replacement when the transfer window opens.

One player they’re looking at, according to The Sun, is Ligue 1 midfielder Jean Michael Seri.

The paper say that the Reds are actually favourites to sign him ahead of Manchester United and Barcelona, who have both registered interest previously.

The report goes on to state that he could be available for £35m, putting him well within Liverpool’s summer budget.

Would he be a good signing?

Seri can undoubtedly add a more defensive presence to an attack-minded Liverpool midfield, helping to screen the defensive line and fight fires in the middle of the park before moving the ball on to their more creative talents.

According to WhoScored, the player has a 90.2% passing success rate in Ligue 1 this season, so certainly has the technical ability to make an impact at Anfield. With 42 key passes this season too, it’s clear he can be penetrative when need be.

With 28 dribbles too, it’s clearly he’s comfortable carrying the ball, complementing his defensive responsibilities with more expansive play, ideal for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool.
