Christian Benteke is one of Liverpool’s “major priorities” this summer, according to former Red Ray Houghton.
The Anfield giants are believed to be on the lookout for a striker despite having already agreed a Bosman deal with Danny Ings, and Aston Villa’s powerful Belgian has been aligned with the club.
Even though Brendan Rodgers’ side have played their best football with fluid, pacey attackers such as Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, Benteke – a burly target man – is on their radar, despite a £32.5m release clause, according to Houghton:
“I’ve heard Benteke is one of their major priorities in the summer, he is the one they are looking to sign,” he told talkSPORT.
“Benteke would fit into Liverpool’s style. He’s big and physical and he’s something Liverpool haven’t got at the moment. He can upset defenders, he’s got genuine pace and, when you get him in the right frame of mine, he can score goals.
“That’s something Liverpool have been missing.”
Benteke shone for the Villains at the back end of last season following the arrival of Tim Sherwood, with a fine goalscoring run taking his tally to 15 in all competitions while helping the Midlands club to a shock FA Cup Final appearance.
The 24-year-old has been in the Premier League since joining Villa from Genk in 2012, and has shone despite a series of injury issues.
