Former Red Jason McAteer has made two bold predictions that are likely to delight Liverpool fans.

What did he say?

The first concerns Steven Gerrard, his former teammate, and McAteer suggests that he is likely to succeed Jurgen Klopp when the German decides to depart Anfield, which he thinks will be in 2021.

Klopp is chasing the elusive first league title in 30 years and the former midfielder thinks that when he achieves it, he will soon make way for the Liverpool legend.

That's why he points to 2021 as an ideal time to do so - as he thinks the Anfield outfit will win the league this year.

Writing in the Racing Post, McAteer said: "I’ve got an inkling that Gerrard will be the next Liverpool manager in 2021.

"I’m confident Liverpool will win the Premier League this season under Jurgen Klopp and then he’ll stick around to try to retain the trophy for another season.

"And whether he succeeds or fails, my hunch is that he’ll walk away at that point and Stevie will step into his shoes."

He also admitted it will be a difficult role to follow the former Borussia Dortmund manager, but believes Gerrard will get the time he needs to impress, and given the quality in the squad it will be a great opportunity for him.

Emulating Lampard

McAteer also highlighted the job Lampard is doing at Chelsea. Like Gerrard he has a year's managerial experience under his belt but has now joined a club where he is held in high regard, and is succeeding.

The former Liverpool player is well-liked at Rangers and is steadily improving the side, whilst competing for the title is sure to help build his understanding and knowledge of how to handle affairs in a pressured environment.

If he stays in Scotland for the foreseeable future he should build-up his managerial attributes so that he is better prepared for the Liverpool job - that is if the owners view him as a suitable candidate.

If the Reds do win the title they will be hungry for more success, and opting for an inexperienced Gerrard may not be their desired course of action.

Klopp, too, has previously stated that he is not looking beyond his contract, which expires in 2022, so he may at least stay until then. It is impossible to predict what will happen until that point, and Gerrard's stock could take a hit if he struggles with Rangers.

Nevertheless, it is an exciting prospect for Liverpool fans.
