Jurgen Klopp has reportedly warned star Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge he is in danger of losing his automatic starting spot within the team, according to the Daily Mail.
Doubts about his long term future on Merseyside have been floating around ever since Klopp’s arrival back in October, such is the nature of his constant injuries.
The emergence of Divock Origi as a viable first-team option for the Reds has somewhat eclipsed the return of the England international, who has suffered a nightmare spell with lengthy injuries for much of the last 18 months.
So much so in fact, that the young Belgian marksman was included in the starting lineup for the crunch Europa League quarter-final clash with Borussia Dortmund ahead of the ex-Chelsea forward.
During the match in Germany, the former scored at Signal Iduna Park and turned in an impressive display against the Bundesliga giants, constantly asking questions of their backline.
‘I have no doubt about the quality of Daniel Sturridge,’ said Klopp.
‘But how could he be absolutely 100 per cent in his best shape in all his long breaks from training and matches?’
‘It’s only about what is best for the next game. It’s not about the name.’
‘Daniel is really doing well. He had no problem when he saw he was not starting. He was really greedy to come on.’
