Mario Balotelli is making a “mockery” of Liverpool and the club would be better off with Shane Long up front, according to former Red Steve Nicol.
The £16m Italian arrived at Anfield over the summer from AC Milan, with many suggesting that he had the personality and ability to replace departed star Luis Suarez.
But with a third of the season gone, ‘Balo’ has just two Reds goals to his name, with neither having come in the Premier League.
And events earlier this week have seen Balotelli’s name in the press for the wrong reasons, with the 24-year-old having posted an ill-advised image on Instagram, for which he may yet be punished.
Although a somewhat troubled star, sections of the club’s supports want Brendan Rodgers to stick by the former Manchester City man, but Nicol has had enough of the forward, claiming that a player like Southampton’s Shane Long would have been a better signing:
“They spent £16million on Balotelli but I would prefer to have signed someone like Shane Long,” he told talkSPORT. “He’s someone who will come on the field and throw his guts into a game and give you everything he’s got.
“He might hot have the ability or the CV of Balotelli but the fans would love him.
“Instead, you’ve got a guy who is not producing on the field and who’s making a mockery of the club off the field.”
