Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez have been in terrific form so far this campaign.

In the absence of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren, the two have managed to strike up a strong partnership at the heart of Liverpool's defence. In their last nine Premier League games before this weekend's matches, they had kept a huge eight clean sheets, whilst conceding just one goal during that spell.

However, it is being said that Lovren may look to exit the club in the summer, whilst Matip cannot be relied on due to his constant injuries issues. As such, a new centre-back would not go amiss, and according to tuttonapoli.net, the Reds are targetting Marash Kumbulla from Hellas Verona.

The 20-year-old plays for the side who were placed sixth before the weekend, having conceded the fourth-fewest amount of goals in the whole division (24) - in fact, only the leading trio of Juventus, Lazio and Inter Milan had actually managed to do any better.

Kumbulla has contributed to that massively. So far this campaign, he has won 1.4 out of the two tackles per match he has attempted. That is a number that is equal to Gomez's and van Dijk's tallies combined - the former had won 0.9 out of 1.4 before the weekend, whilst the latter had won 0.5 out of 0.8.

That is not to say that the Albania international would walk into the team at Anfield - Gomez and van Dijk have struck up a partnership for the next two or three years at least, you would imagine. However, the Netherlands international will be 29 by the start of next season, meaning that he does not have the whole of his career left. At 20, Kumbulla is only just starting out. With a price of at least €30m (£25m), he will not be extraordinarily cheap, but in the long run his purchase could be a sound investment.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans are in uproar at this article on Jurgen Klopp.
