Lawrenson heaps more praise on Liverpool ahead of Newcastle clash

Mark Lawrenson has heaped praise on Liverpool’s attacking prowess ahead of Newcastle’s visit to Anfield, especially Roberto Firmino.

“This is a return to Anfield for Newcastle’s former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, but it probably won’t be a happy one”, the ex-Liverpool defender said on his Premier League predictions for BBC Sport.

“Everyone is raving about Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane’s form but Roberto Firmino has been outstanding too.

“Firmino has kicked on since Philippe Coutinho left for Barcelona in January, but Salah in particular has grabbed all the headlines. I think Firmino deserves more credit.”

The 26 year-old Brazilian grabbed a goal in Liverpool’s 4-1 domination of West Ham last week. Valued at £45million on Transfermarkt, Firmino has had an excellent season and has started adding more goals in recent weeks, scoring 11 times in his last 14 Premier League appearances.

Newcastle may feel quietly confident themselves though; the Magpies had conceded more than one goal only once in the eight matches preceding their collapse at Bournemouth. On top of that, Rafa Benitez’s men have lost by more than a one-goal margin just once in the 22 matches Jamaal Lascelles has started this season, away at Manchester City.

The battle at Anfield may well come down to how well Lascelles can nullify Liverpool’s Brazilian striker; Lawrenson’s prediction is 2-0 to the home side.
