The Slovakian international has been a key man at Anfield since his arrival in 2008, but has found his place in the first-team called into question under Brendan Rodgers.
Some shaky displays last season saw the Northern Irishman drop Skrtel in favour of veteran defender Jamie Carragher, while the arrivals of Mamadou Sakho, Tiago Ilori and Kolo Toure have further plunged his future into doubt.
Skrtel was widely expected to leave Merseyside on deadline day, but not formal offers were received by Liverpool.
However Napoli are now lining up a loan move for the rugged enforcer this winter.
Former Reds chief Rafael Benitez in now in charge of the Serie A giants, and is known to be a big fan of Skrtel.
The 28-year-old – who was voted as Man of the Match in his side’s victory over Manchester United prior to the international break – has previously admitted that he could be convinced to leave the club, and may pursue a move if his first-team opportunities are limited.
As well as Napoli, Russian side Zenit Saint Petersburg – whom Skrtel used to play for – are said to be monitoring the situation.
Is it time for Martin Skrtel to leave Liverpool?
