The Netherlands international has emerged as one of the Reds’ major transfer targets over the course of the past week after a deal for Poland international Piotr Zielinski evaded the them, and looks set to become Jurgen Klopp’s fifth summer addition.
There has been much speculation surrounding the deal of late, but despite suggestions that the Tyneside club would stick resolutely to their £27m valuation, a fee of close to £25m has reportedly been agreed between the clubs.
Wijnaldum scored 11 goals in his debut campaign as Newcastle slipped to relegation last season, and few expected the £14.5m signing from PSV Eindhoven to stay at St James’ Park for a second campaign.
The 25-year-old is likely to join up with the Liverpool squad for their pre-season tour of America once the deal is made official.
Interestingly, Chronicle reporter, Lee Ryder, shed some light on the negotiations between the two clubs, claiming that the North East side issued the Merseysiders with an ultimatum:
“Talks took place between #nufc and #lfc through the night for Wijnaldum. Player’s agent confident deal will be struck soon.
“#nufc are believed to have told #lfc to make their minds up on Wijnaldum after transfer talk was affecting team focus in pre-season.”
