According to 90min.com, Liverpool are interested in signing Rayan Cherki from Lyon.
The report says that the Reds have joined Premier League rivals Manchester United and Manchester City in the race to sign the 16-year-old.
Not only that, Real Madrid are also said to be in pursuit. Even though he has a contract until 2022, Jean-Michel Aulas knows he is fighting a losing battle, and he may be ready to let the teenager depart in January if the price is right.
Cherki clearly has a lot of talent, as well as a huge future ahead of him considering the list of clubs who are interested in his services. Even though he only turned 16 in August, he already has three appearances for Les Gones, including one in the Champions League. He has looked particularly exciting in the UEFA Youth League, scoring four goals and providing one assist in four matches so far this term. Former manager Bruno Genesio even called him “an alien” due to his ability on the ball.
However, he is still lacking in experience at his age, and there is likely to be plenty of competition for his signature. On top of that, the Anfield outfit’s previous dealings with the Ligue 1 club should warn them off trying to sign the France U16 international.
A couple of summers ago, you may remember that the Merseyside club were very close to capturing Nabil Fekir. The now Real Betis player was all but a Red, and had even conducted interviews with the club’s TV channel in regards to the move. However, the deal didn’t go through, with Liverpool saying that a knee injury had convinced them not to sign him. Aulas, however, said in December last year that the deal had fallen through because of a change of heart from the English team (RMC via Goal.com), effectively saying that the Merseyside outfit had lied.
The Lyon president had been very vocal about the whole deal. At one point, he even gave Fekir an ultimatum to complete the move (Canal+ via The Liverpool Echo).
Cherki may be a promising player, but Liverpool should avoid dealing with Lyon considering the 70-year-old’s tendency to talk to the press. Especially at this point in the season, when they are chasing a first Premier League title in 30 years. The last thing they want is any unnecessary distractions off the field.
