Lazio’s Modibo Diakite’s negotiations with Napoli have broken down meaning Liverpool are back in the race to sign him, according to TalkSport.
Lazio’s commanding centre-back has been at the club since 2006, but is out of contract at the end of summer.
The France ace has been strongly linked with a move to Napoli but recent reports claim that the negotiations between Lazio and the Naples club have broken down and the Reds may be back in business.
Liverpool are in desperate need of a new centre-back, Lille star Aurelien Chedjou and Vasco Da Gama defender Dede have also been linked, but the Reds have watched the 26-year-old Diakite for the past year.
Manager Brendan Rogers isn’t ready to give young defenders Sebastian Coates, Andre Wisdom, or Martin Kelly a starting berth. This has Rogers searching for a replacement for Jamie Carragher, who is retiring at the end of the season, and Martin Skrtel, who lost his starting role after a series of poor performances.
Sources in Italy claim they are not the only club keen to capitalise on Napoli’s failure to agree a deal, with AC Milan and Fiorentina considering making a move for the defender.
Liverpool have also been tracking Cameroonian defenders Aurelien Chedjou of Lille and Nicolas N’Koulou of Marseille.
