Liverpool boss confirms Matip has returned to training

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip has returned to first-team training following a spell on the sidelines with a muscular problem.

Matip, who is valued at £22.5m by transfermarkt.co.uk, has not represented Liverpool since the club’s 3-0 win at Stoke City towards the end of November.

The injury has forced the centre-back to miss games against Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton, West Bromwich Albion and Bournemouth in the month of December.

Klopp has revealed that the 26-year-old is back training following the issue, but has admitted that he is unsure whether the defender will be available for Friday’s clash with Arsenal.

Klopp told reporters:

“Matip was back in training yesterday. We have some little reactions from last game, need to wait a bit with different players.

“I’m not sure he’s ready for Arsenal but the games coming up, (I’m) pretty sure.”

Liverpool will look to stretch their unbeaten run in the Premier League to 10 matches when they travel to an inconsistent Arsenal on Friday night.

The Reds are currently fourth in the Premier League table – four points off third-placed Chelsea.
