Brendan Rodgers has stated that he wants to keep Glen Jonhson and Lucas at Liverpool beyond the end of this month.
The duo have both been linked with moves to Serie A sides in recent months, with the right-back a target for Roma at the end of the season, while Inter Milan have been aligned with a £7m move for the Brazilian midfielder.
While Lucas has been firmly back in Rodgers’ first-team plans of late and has been winning plaudits from fans for his displays in the centre of the pitch, Johnson’s presence has been less celebrated – even though he’s currently out injured.
And when quizzed on the situation regarding the pair, the Northern Irishman revealed that he’s looking to ensure they both stay at Anfield:
“Glen Johnson we want to keep, Lucas we want to keep.” He is quoted by the Daily Star.
“We can’t have three or four leaving next season. The intention will be to keep everyone, partly because of the mix in the group.
“Steven [Gerrard] will obviously be a loss, when you are losing someone of that calibre of man and player it would be a loss to any club, but you move on.
“For the younger players to develop their potential they are going to need that seniority around them. You can’t just have a whole group of young players.”
Gerrard is sue to leave Liverpool at the end of the season to join MLS champions LA Galaxy, ending his career-long stay on the red half of Merseyside.
