Liverpool boss given £20million transfer warchest

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers

Liverpool are set to hand Brendan Rodgers a £20million kitty to spend this summer as he looks to continue his rebuilding of the team as part of his future plans.

Rodgers joined Liverpool last season and immediately put into place a plan to rebuild the team over the next few years. He has spent £46million over the last two transfer windows and even though they got off to a bad start in the Premier League this season, there has been a distinct improvement in form in the last couple of months.

The Reds boss wants to avoid a costly spend every summer so he intends on purchasing two or three players over the next few transfer windows to rebuild the squad slowly. He will be given the £20million to spend this transfer window plus any funds from players that he decides to sell.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph about his future plans, he discussed his need to spend in the summer to stick to his plan of having two decent players for every position.

“There is no doubt there is a natural rebuilding that will come with the likes of Jamie Carragher retiring. I am happy with the squad if I can then put another three or four quality players to it,” Rodgers said.

“It is quality we are after, not quantity. We see Coutinho and Sturridge‘s quality in January, if we bring in another three or four players of that quality and add that to what we have got then we have got a strong squad.

“You want between 20 and 22 players. I’m talking about two in every position and your three goalkeepers. Then below that having young players who can support that.”

Rodgers will probably spend all of the £20million purse that has been made available for him this summer and his main priority will be finding central defenders to replace Jamie Carragher and Martin Skrtel. And after gaining a lot of knowledge on Liverpool’s position over his last year at Anfield, he admitted that it has given him a better idea of what areas in the squad need to be strengthened first.

“Of course you have an ideal target, but we are getting to a situation now where, for me, you have to have three players and if one doesn’t come off you have to be comfortable with the other two,” he added.

“We never had that in the summer but there were some key positions we needed support in and what I didn’t want to do was waste the club’s money. I like to be extensive and know what we are bringing in, but also we did not have the time and that was the big issue.

“January was a productive window for us and hopefully if we do the similar in the summer then it’s going to be a real good place for us.”
