Brendan Rodgers is thrilled that Philippe Coutinho has committed his long-term future to Liverpool and believes that he will become a key player in the Reds’ set-up going forward.
The Brazilian starlet has been mightily impressive in recent weeks, with his position in a front three alongside the likes of Raheem Sterling having been a major factor in the club’s rise up the table through January.
Coutinho’s new deal ties him to the Anfield club until 2020, which comes as a welcome boost to fans of the Merseysiders, who have seen star names such as Fernando Torres and Luis Suarez leave in recent years and are preparing for an emotional farewell to Steven Gerrard at the end of the current campaign.
Rodgers is thrilled with his 22-year-old star’s decision to pen a new contract, and has hailed him as a major part of his plans at the club:
“I’m delighted that Philippe has committed his long-term future to us; he is clearly going to be a big part of our story in the years to come,” he is quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
“The most exciting thing isn’t just how good he is now, it’s the further improvement he can make in his game. In terms of potential, he can still become even better.
“He deserves all the credit in the world for the attitude he has shown since coming to Liverpool. He arrived as a young man, in a country he’d never lived in before and joined a club where expectations are high. He has shown a willingness to listen, learn and improve.”
Coutinho signed for Liverpool 24 months ago, arriving from Inter Milan in a £8.5m deal in the same window the club cinched Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.
