The Slovakian defender was widely expected to leave Anfield over the summer, with the club tying up deals for Tiago Ilori, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho.
However, no late bids came in for the no-nonsense enforcer, despite rumoured interest from Napoli.
But, Rafael Benitez is now ready to reignite his pursuit of Skrtel with a £10m January offer.
The Spaniard swooped to bring the 28-year-old to Merseyside in 2008, and has remained a fan of his talents ever since.
Liverpool could be open to selling Skrtel, with Brendan Rodgers believed to be unconvinced of his suitability to the club’s new playing style.
Benitez is hopeful that his relationship with the Reds may aid his chances of securing the defender, who is likely to jump at the chance to sign for Napoli to play Champions League football in the same side as international colleague Marek Hamsik.
The Serie A side have recently crossed paths with Liverpool in the transfer market by bringing Pepe Reina in on a loan deal.
They may pursue a similar deal for Skrtel with a view to a permanent switch next summer.
