Liverpool captain talks up title challenge

Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard believes that his side are genuine contenders for the Premier League title after their 3-0 win at Manchester United.

The Reds dominated their bitter rivals for much of the 90 minutes at Old Trafford, coming out clear winners at the final whistle thanks to two penalty kicks from their captain and a Luis Suarez effort.

With Chelsea having lost at Aston Villa on Saturday, the Merseyisders clawed to within two points of leaders Chelsea – whom they also possess a game in hand on.

Few predicted that Liverpool would be in the hunt for English football’s top prize at the crunch end of the season, bur Gerrard believes that his side – who take on relegation threatened Cardiff next weekend – have cause to believe that this could be their year:

“I said before the game it’s difficult and we need to just take each game as they come and try and win them all,” he told Sky Sports.

“We’ll enjoy tonight. We need to move on very quickly because Cardiff’s going to be tough.

“I think we’ve shown today that we’re genuine contenders and we’re going to fight to the end for this.”

Liverpool will also host major title rivals Chelsea and Manchester City before the season ends, in two fixtures that may have a major impact on the final outcome.
