Brendan Rodgers is said to be happy to let the 22-year-old defender leave the club, just two years after joining for a fee of £7million.
Coates arrived with a big reputation, having just been crowned a Copa America Champion with Uruguay. However the defender has failed to break into the Anfield first team on a consistent basis, and is now behind Daniel Agger, Martin Skrtel, new signing Kolo Toure, and homegrown youngsters Martin Kelly and Andre Wisdom in the Anfield pecking order.
Fulham would have to pay around £5million for the defender’s services, who would be given the opportunity for regular first team football at Craven Cottage.
Coates made just one league appearance in the second half of the season at Liverpool, falling out of favour with Rodgers after a dismal display in the club’s shock FA Cup exit to Oldham last January.
The Reds are also keen to bring in another centre back during this transfer window, which would see Coates fall down the pecking order even further.
