Liverpool closing in on exciting teenage prospect

Liverpool are closing in on a deal for American youngster Brooks Lennon, who is considered to be one of the best emerging talents in his homeland, according to reports from Goal.

The Reds are believed to have been tracking Real Salt Lake’s 17-year-old for a number of months, and now it’s thought that a deal to lure him across the Atlantic Ocean is near completion.

Although a work permit was set to be an issue for the teenager, Irish citizenship will allow him to make the switch without negotiating the regulations in place.

Lennon has already spent some time on Merseyside in 2014, impressing coaches during a short trial.

It’s understood that this was enough to convince Liverpool to offer him a contract, making it likely that he’ll follow in the footsteps of fellow Americans Villyan Bijev and Marc Pelosi who moved to the North West of England.

Major League Soccer’s rapid expansion has seen the profile of ‘soccer’ grow Stateside, while the USMNT are now thought of as an established international outfit.

Freddy Adu is, perhaps, the most famous example of a talented USA-born prospect, but despite breaking through at 14 his career has stagnated and he now plays in Finland after spells with the likes of Benfica and Monaco.
