Liverpool closing in on first January signing

Liverpool are close to making Basel winger Mohamed Salah their first new signing of 2014, according to reports from The Mirror.

The Egyptian ace – who has been dubbed as his nation’s answer to Lionel Messi – has been earning rave reviews for his displays this term, which include two goal-scoring outings against Chelsea in the Champion League group stage.

Brendan Rodgers is desperate to land fresh faces once the transfer window opens after losing a number of first-team stars to injury, and it is understood that a deal for Salah is close to being completed.

The 21-year-old has been on the Reds’ wish list for some time, with rumours – fuelled by one of the winger’s ex-team-mates – from earlier in December suggesting that a swoop has been 99% complete for a while.

Now it is thought that a deal for Salah could be concluded on Thursday, with negotiations between the player’s representatives and Liverpool having been successful.

The fee in question for the Basel ace is said to be between £7m-£10m, with the Swiss side’s elimination from the Champions League having been a major factor.

Salah is known as a goal scoring winger, with an impressive tally of 17 in 26 for his national side.
