Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has revealed the club considered a move for Welsh wizard Gareth Bale, according to the Daily Express.
The Real Madrid forward shot to prominence at Southampton after breaking their first-team almost a decade ago in 2006, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur a year later.
While in North London he established himself as one of the best players in the world, earning a record breaking move to the Spanish capital in 2013 for around £86m.
Now, Carragher has revealed that he had come on to the Reds’ radar as a youngster on the South Coast, and could have made a switch at an earlier stage in his career.
Now a Sky pundit, the Anfield icon stated ‘when he broke into their team, Rafa Benitez looked at signing him for Liverpool’
‘Bale was playing as a left-back then and Rafa didn’t think he was any better than John Arne Riise’, he added.
Benitez is now in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu and can call of Bale’s services along with the likes of Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and James Rodriguez.
The Welsh international has been linked with a Premier League return following a difficult second season with Los Blancos, after helping the club secure the Champions League and Copa Del Rey when he first arrived – scoring crucial goals in both finals.
