The Reds have been courting the Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder to the Premier League all summer, as Brendan Rodgers has looked to quickly strengthen his side this transfer window.
But now the Northern Irishman could watch Mkhitaryan join Borussia Dortmund, who have reportedly taken the lead in the race for the 24-year-old’s signature. The Champions League finalists are keen to replace Mario Götze, who has officially joined Bayern Munich.
Both clubs have made contract offers for the Armenian midfielder, and now await his decision.
Liverpool had lined up a move for Mkhitaryan before striker Luis Suarez had even started pushing for a summer exit. Rodgers, along with managing director Ian Ayre, had hoped to have completed the deal weeks ago, only for the club to hit a stumbling block over Mkhitaryan’s ownership.
The Armenian could join up with Kolo Toure, Simon Mignolet, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto, who have all made the move to Liverpool this summer.
Shakhtar are currently unaware of Mkhitaryan’s whereabouts, after the 24-year-old failed to turn up for pre-season training, in a bid to push through a transfer out of Ukraine.
He is expected to announce his decision in the next few days.
Who should Mkhitaryan join, Liverpool or Dortmund?
