The Bayern pair have both been linked with a move to the Premier League, but it’s now been revealed that they can’t both leave.
Bayern’s chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said that he will only sanction the move of one of the transfers, as he isn’t prepared to lose two defensive players, especially now the Bundesliga season has restarted.
Liverpool were already facing competition for Contento, with Werder Bremen also interested in the £1.75million defender. But Bayern advisor Ludwig Kogl said that Bayern will decide.
“There was contact with Werder but what matters is what Bayern want,” Kogl said.
And now the Reds are facing indirect competition from Premier Legaue rivals Arsenal, who have bid £17.2million for Brazilian midfielder Gustavo. Should the offer be accepted, it is likely that Liverpool’s move for Contento will be stopped.
The Reds are desperate to bring in a new left-back, with concerns over Jose Enrique at the Merseyside club. But as the Gunners look to fill the gap left by Alex Song last summer, their move for Gustavo could scupper Rodgers’ transfer plans ahead of the new season.
Enrique is likely to start at left-back for the Reds in their home game against Stoke on Saturday.
Who should Liverpool look at instead? Do they need to replace Enrique?
