Liverpool edging towards freebie arrival

Liverpool are on the verge of tying up a deal for out-of-contract goalkeeper Victor Valdes, according to reports from Goal.

The Reds have been heavily linked with the former Barcelona star in recent weeks, and now it’s understood that he’s set to undergo a medical with the Merseysiders within the next fortnight.

Brendan Rodgers is rumoured to be keen to provide Simon Mignolet with top-level competition following his shaky start to the campaign, with free agent Valdes his main target.

However, he 32-year-old’s potential addition will not come without risk, with the stopper having missed much of 2014 with a serious knee injury.

An in-depth medical is expected, with Liverpool’s hierarchy reluctant to offer a big contract to the ‘keeper without guarantees that he will be fit for regular action.

Reports suggest that the signs are indeed good, with Valdes now at the back end of his rehabilitation.

The ex-Barca star is seen as a more convincing option between the sticks than Mignolet, with the experienced ace having won just about every top prize available to him at club and international level.

Valdes was expected to join Monaco over the summer, but the deal fell through after the French giants pulled the plug amid concerns about his injury.

He can be brought in at any time due to be unattached to any club.
