Liverpool eye Championship star as Gerrard heir

Liverpool are tracking Bolton’s impressive young midfielder Josh Vela as they prepare for life after Steven Gerrard, according to reports from The Metro.

The Reds’ iconic 34-year-old skipper is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season when his contract expires to join MLS giants LA Galaxy.

Gerrard, although fading as the years advance, is still a key player on Merseyside, though, and Brendan Rodgers is thought to be planning for life when he’s gone.

A few big names have been mentioned, but Bolton’s Vela is a surprise candidate.

The 21-year-old has impressed in the Championship outfit in recent times, and it’s believed that Liverpool’s coaching staff were wowed by his showings against them in their recent FA Cup double header.

Scouts are understood to be monitoring his progress and could do so for the remainder of the campaign.

The Gerrard comparisons have already been kicked off by Bolton boss Neil Lennon, with the Northern Irishman comparing his style to the former England skipper:

“He reminds me a lot of Gerrard, in the way he handles himself on the pitch.” He said.

“That slim, athletic build, he handles the ball well and gets round the pitch, he’s composed and can play a variety of positions.”
