Liverpool were hard at work this summer building a squad capable of challenging Manchester City, and reports in Spain claim Jurgen Klopp is ready to go one step further by signing Barcelona wonderkid Ousmane Dembele.

What's the story?

According to Mundo Deportivo, Klopp is once again eyeing a move for Dembele as the Frenchman struggles for playing time in Catalonia.

Klopp wanted Dembele from Rennes before his move Dortmund, and again from Dortmund before his move to Barcelona.

The World Cup winner has been unable to make an impression with the Spanish Giants after suffering a serious muscle injury last season, and Klopp joked about signing him earlier this year.

Signing Dembele would add yet another weapon to Klopp’s dangerous attacking arsenal, and could just be the last piece of the puzzle for the Reds to win some trophies.

The perfect Klopp signing?

Liverpool’s play under Klopp last season was nothing short of exceptional, but fans, pundits and experts alike all knew their lack of squad depth would hurt them eventually.

Fabinho, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri have all added to the depth and competition in the midfield, but the Reds are still a little light up front. Manchester City arguably have four world class wingers, and there is very little cover for Sadio Mane at the moment.

Dembele can play on either wing, and his unique mixture of speed, skill and lethal finishing would make him the perfect understudy for Mane. Many consider him to have a higher ceiling than Kylian Mbappe due to his ability to absolutely terrorise defenders.

The 21-year-old is completely two-footed, making his electric acceleration and dribbling almost impossible to stop.

He doesn’t quite fit the mould of what Barcelona want from their attacking players, but it’s no surprise Klopp has chased him in the past as he looks tailor made for the German’s high-tempo style.

If Liverpool really want to compete for multiple trophies, then signing Dembele could well and truly make the difference, especially given Shaqiri’s recent move into midfield.
