Liverpool eyeing Serie A star as potential Sterling replacement

Liverpool are looking at Napoli’s impressive wide attacker Dries Mertens as Raheem Sterling’s transfer saga rumbles on, according to reports from TuttoMercatoWeb.

The Reds’ 20-year-old starlet’s future has been up in the air for some time, and now it’s believed that Manchester City are plotting an offer of around £45m for his signature.

With such an amount having been mooted as ‘acceptable’ for the player, Brendan Rodgers’ side may have to look around for a replacement, and reports claim that Mertens is on their agenda.

The Belgian has starred for Napoli in Serie A since signing for the Naples side in 2013 from PSV Eindhoven, and has been lauded for his pace and quick feet.

His future at the San Paolo is understood to be uncertain following the club’s unsuccessful pursuit of Champions League qualification, with his agent having suggested that he could leave.

With an ability to play on either flank, Mertens, 28, could fill Sterling’s boots, however, a lack of top-level European football at Anfield may be an issue.
