Liverpool face fight to keep star as Atletico Madrid lurk

Philippe Coutinho (Liverpool)Ateltico Madrid are plotting a stunning January move for Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, according to reports from the Sunday People.

The impish Brazilian has emerged as one of the Premier League’s top creative talents since his arrival at Anfield from Inter Milan earlier this year.

The 21-year-old has quickly become one of Brendan Rodgers’ key men on Merseyside, providing a link between the misfiled and attack.

His impressive displays have caught the eye of Atletico, who are keen to launch a winter raid if they make it past the group stage of the Champions League.

The Spaniards are keen to inject further creativity into their side, and are confident that they can fund a move if they advance to the latter stages of the competition.

Tentative enquiries were made about the youngster over the summer, but Liverpool swiftly shot down interest from the Vicente Calderon-based side.

Coutinho – who is currently out of action with a shoulder injury – is hopeful of winning a spot in the Brazilian national side ahead of the 2014 World Cup.

His chances of doing so may be increased if he is to be playing Champions League football, which could cause him to seek a move.

Liverpool are reluctant to sell, and would likely seek to make a huge profit on the £8m paid for his signature 10 months ago.
