Liverpool face transfer battle for Anzhi star

Lacina Traore (Anzhi Makhachkala)Liverpool will have to fight off interest from Zenit Saint-Petersburg and CSKA Moscow if they are to secure a deal for Anzhi Makhachkala striker Lacina Traore, according to reports from Izvestia.

The Reds have been linked with the powerful Ivorian for some time, and are believed to have been alerted by the Russian giants’ eagerness to sell.

Anzhi are desperate to slash their extravagant expenditure after owner, Suleyman Kerimov, announced that he will no longer fund mega money transfer moves.

Stars such as Samuel Eto’o and Willian have already left the Dagestan-based outfit, which has gone some way towards making the club’s activity sustainable.

Traore was one big name that was not sold before the deadline, but he is widely expected to leave this winter.

CSKA and Zenit are both keen, and have been buoyed by news that Anzhi are willing to do business with domestic rivals.

Liverpool are believed to still be in the hunt, but may be unable to compete with their Eastern European rivals’ financial muscle.

Traore has often been lauded for his immense physical presence, which his aided by a staggering 6ft 8” frame.

Although his stature does not suit Brendan Rodgers’ playing style, the Reds chief may be keen to utilise the forward to offer him more options.
