Liverpool face transfer battle with former boss

Martin Montoya (Barcelona)Liverpool’s hopes of agreeing a pre-contract deal with Barcelona defender Martin Montoya may be thwarted by former their manager Rafael Benitez, according to reports from talkSPORT.

The Spaniard is now in charge of Serie A giants Napoli, and is thought to be eyeing the 22-year-old Spaniard as a potential signing.

Montoya looks set to leave Barca after growing frustrated at a lack of first-team opportunities.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season, clubs outside of La Liga are allowed to discuss a free transfer this winter, which will take effect when his deal expires.

Liverpool were believed to be leading the race, but now Napoli have emerged as major rivals.

The Naples side are reportedly willing to offer him £50,000-per-week to swap the Nou Camp for the San Paolo.

The lure of Champions League football may be enough to encourage Montoya to reject the Reds and head to Italy.

Arsenal are also keen, as are Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.

Montoya was thought to be keen to stay at Barca, but with Dani Alves established as the club’s first choice right-back he is thought to be ready to move in order to further his career.
