Liverpool’s hopes of concluding a summer deal for Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos have suffered a set-back, after the club’s sporting director revealed that interest in the player is high, according to reports from The Express.
The Reds have been chasing the highly-rated Greek international for some time, but have refused to meet the Bundesliga side’s valuation due to fears over the 21-year-old’s fitness.
Papadopoulos missed the majority of the 2012/13 season due to a knee problem, and has only just returned to full training following surgery.
Some reports suggest that Brendan Rodgers will make another attempt to lure the commending centre-back to Anfield before the transfer window shuts, but Schalke’s sporting director Horst Heldt has hinted that there is much interest in the player:
“There are a lot of clubs to take into account.
“Specifically, there is nothing that has arrived, as far as I know.”
Rodgers is thought to see Papadopoulos as the ideal replacement for Martin Skrtel, who is believed to be on the verge of leaving Merseyside to join former manager Rafael Benitez at Napoli.
There are also doubts surrounding the future of Daniel Agger, who is bsaid to be a target for Spanish giants Barcelona.
