Michael Oliver has been appointed as the referee to take charge of Liverpool’s visit to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Manchester United. 

Oliver is one the most experienced and respected officials currently working in the Premier League. As per WhoScored’s stats, so far this season he has taken charge of 21 top flight matches. He has handed out 61 yellow cards and five reds in that time. He has also averaged 0.43 penalty awards per match - only Kevin Friend has averaged more penalty awards per game.

Considering the bitter rivalry between Liverpool and the Red Devils, Oliver will have to be on top of his game to ensure that tempers don’t rise on the pitch. Failure to impose his authority and assert his control from the outset could lead to the occasion overcoming Oliver.
