Liverpool dropped back down to earth after the euphoria of Wednesday’s Champions League victory against Roma, with a disappointing 1-0 loss away to Chelsea.
Oliver Giroud scored the decisive goal in the first half as Liverpool struggled to break down a rigid Chelsea defence.
The race for the top for will go to the wire, with three points separating Chelsea in fifth and Liverpool in third.
Chelsea, at home to Huddersfield on Wednesday and away to Newcastle on Sunday, would finish above Liverpool if they win both their remaining games and the Reds fail to beat Brighton at Anfield on the final day.
Tottenham are a point behind Liverpool and, like Chelsea, have a game in hand.
Liverpool’s squad depth was once again questioned as manager Jurgen Klopp did not have any strong striking options on the bench. He turned to youngster Dominic Solanke, 20, who failed to make an impact.
Liverpool fans heavily criticised the youngster’s performance, and here’s what they were saying on Twitter.
Solanke is without a doubt the worst player to ever play for Liverpool

Did anyone actually see Solanke win the golden boot at the World Cup? I mean we’ve all lied on our CV but…

We looked very jaded after a hard season – need quality attacking cover. Ings / solanke not the answer.

The performance isn’t in particular to blame for Liverpool loss today. The lack of squad depth is. Becomes incredibly transparent when, as today, the dynamic of the game stands still – and the biggest impact subs on the bench are Solanke/Ings

Question is why did we let Origi go and bring in this Solanke guy?
— bright_mahwitethvgod (@bright_mahwite) May 6, 2018
Solanke is worse than Borini
— Ryan (@RyanJA98) May 6, 2018
Honestly, if you think Origi was worse than Solanke, you're effectively saying hes an amputee. NO ONE is worse than Solanke. Hes the worst striker we've ever had
— Sean (@DivvyOrigi) May 6, 2018
Solanke shouldn't be near the pitch in a situation like that. Hard on the kid but he isn't ready yet
— LFC News (@LFCTransferNRS) May 6, 2018
Subbing on Solanke is the football equivalent of throwing in the towel.
— Kristian (@vonstrenginho) May 6, 2018
Solanke is championship level, Chelsea have likes of Willian to bring on while we have Solanke, and people are falling over themselves to praise FSG absolute madness
