Joe Gomez missed out on a spot in England's World Cup team due to injury and lack of game time.

The Liverpool defender has spent the last couple of seasons playing as a right-back, but after Trent Alexander-Arnold came of age, Gomez has been forced out.

This season, though, it appears that manager Jurgen Klopp will use the 21-year-old as a centre-back.

Due to Dejan Lovren's injury, Gomez has started alongside Virgil van Dijk for the club's opening two Premier League matches.

Against West Ham United and Crystal Palace, the young defender was calm and composed on the ball.

He worked well with Van Dijk and has certainly made a case to be the Dutchman's regular centre-back partner for the season.

It seems that England manager Gareth Southgate has been impressed by Gomez's start as the Daily Mail reports that the Liverpool man will be included in September's squad to face Spain and Switzerland.

Some Liverpool fans have not been left thrilled by the news due to fears that the defender could suffer an injury on international duty.
