Liverpool fans hit back at criticism of Henderson’s performance against Croatia

England manager Gareth Southgate put his faith in Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson ahead Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier for the duration of the World Cup, and he was right to.

The Reds’ midfielder, who has earned 44 international caps, impressed on the global stage in Russia, but he was unable to help the Three Lions claim victory in Wednesday night’s semi-final against Croatia.

England led the way for 68 minutes thanks to Kieran Trippier’s early goal, but Ivan Perisic found an equaliser for Croatia, which forced the tie into extra time.

During those 30 minutes, Mario Mandzukic broke English hearts by finding the winning goal and booking a spot in the final against France.

Croatia dominated the second half, and with 97 minutes on the clock, Henderson was substituted for Dier.

After the match, The Telegraph ran a piece claiming that Henderson’s tireless performance was not enough to quell the threat of Luka Modric.

The suggestion that the midfielder failed in his task has rubbed some Liverpool fans up the wrong way, and they made their frustrations clear on Twitter.
