England manager Gareth Southgate put his faith in Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson ahead Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier for the duration of the World Cup, and he was right to.
The Reds’ midfielder, who has earned 44 international caps, impressed on the global stage in Russia, but he was unable to help the Three Lions claim victory in Wednesday night’s semi-final against Croatia.
England led the way for 68 minutes thanks to Kieran Trippier’s early goal, but Ivan Perisic found an equaliser for Croatia, which forced the tie into extra time.
During those 30 minutes, Mario Mandzukic broke English hearts by finding the winning goal and booking a spot in the final against France.
Croatia dominated the second half, and with 97 minutes on the clock, Henderson was substituted for Dier.

After the match, The Telegraph ran a piece claiming that Henderson’s tireless performance was not enough to quell the threat of Luka Modric.
The suggestion that the midfielder failed in his task has rubbed some Liverpool fans up the wrong way, and they made their frustrations clear on Twitter.
Who wrote this? Modric had very little influence and Henderson went off at 1-1. Did you have 2 stories in draft and press send on the wrong one ?

WRONG! He had him pocketed for 45 minutes but Southgate failed because Croatia changed tact in 2nd half, we played same system & continued to watch momentum & our chances go by. How did Lingard & Alli stay on?
Croatia had Henderson boxed (literally 4 man box) around Hendo.

Until Hendo went off Modric was ineffective. The game opened up and England’s shape changed. He was also pretty much on his own against Modric and Rakitic

What an awful article. Terrible journalism. Anything for a click.

Oh grow up !
Not enough support for him midfield pic.twitter.com/bmH07JP1W1

How did he fail. Southgate took him off and put that Dier on. Mistake from Southgate

Modric did nothing before Hendo off the pitch. Walker is utter shambles, Kane is nonexistent, Lingard and Sterling is useless and yet you only point out Hendo?
