Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has a huge game this weekend as he prepares to lead his team out against Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
After that, though, the midfielder will switch focus to England’s World Cup campaign in Russia, but he may have suffered a dent to his confidence heading into the competition.
England manager Gareth Southgate has opted to appoint Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane as captain for the duration of their time in Russia.
Since Southgate became permanent coach in November 2016, Kane and Henderson have alternated as skippers, but it is the former who has been given the honour for the World Cup.
The Tottenham striker has the advantage of being able to join up with the England squad earlier than Henderson due to the Liverpool midfielder’s Champions League commitment.
However, some Reds fans are disappointed that their player was not given the armband.
Others made the ‘Kane claimed it’ joke, relating to the Spurs striker’s successful appeal to take Christian Eriksen’s goal against Stoke City during the Premier League campaign.

So the real reason why Southgate picked Kane as Captain was that Henderson won't be with the England Squad Training until next month and he wanted a Captain at training from the start.

Harry Kane, England captain? Honestly, when you have Henderson in the team, how can you make Kane captain? I guess it's just feeding his ego. And this is not a biased opinion bc I'm a lfc supporter. #lfc #fa #englandfa

I'm sad for Jordan Henderson that he has been overlooked for the England captaincy in favour of Harry Kane. It is the greatest honour to captain your nation to a World Cup. He will avoid the backlash when England inevitably fail but it will be of little consolation to him. #LFC

Let’s be real Jordan Henderson is going to be captain and play like one irrespective of whether he has the captains armband or not. He’s just that type of player, He leads by example and is somewhat a senior figure in the squad. #LFC #EnglandCaptain
