Joe Gomez has struggled with injuries over the last few years, but the Liverpool defender seemed to have rid himself of the problems this season.
The 20-year-old – valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt – spent almost a year on the sidelines across two spells with cruciate ligament damage and later an Achilles problem.
This season, Gomez has started 27 games in all competitions, but he will now miss the final match of the Premier League season, as well as the Champions League final due to an ankle injury.
The full-back initially suffered the problem while on international duty with England in March, but opted to play through the pain for Liverpool.
Gomez received plenty of criticism on Twitter for some of his recent performances, but now it has become clear that the youngster has not been fully fit.
The former Charlton Athletic player has taken to social media to confirm that he has undergone ankle surgery and will not feature again this season, nor will he be eligible for selection for the World Cup in Russia this summer.
Gutted to confirm that my season for both club and country is over having undergone successful ankle surgery… Been a tough few weeks trying everything possible to be available on the pitch to help the team. I’m going to do all I can to get back and be in the best possible shape for pre season. The focus now is to support the team in the two biggest games of the season! Thank you for all the support over the course of the season 🙏🏽 YNWA
Liverpool fans have sent plenty of well-wishes via Twitter.
Thanks for putting the team first against West Brom and Stoke, hope you come back stronger 👏🏻

Stay strong Joe, you've been brilliant for our club – ignore the moaners, they'd have given Cafu a hard time – see you on the pitch next season …

Chin up you have had a great season one to be very proud of. You will come back better and stronger. Pity you have to miss out on the CL final and WC but you're young and hopefully you will have loads of opportunities to compete in both. #lfc

Thanks for putting the club first Joe; not all players do this. Don’t listen to a few idiots on here. Come back stronger next season, you’ll have plenty more finals and tournaments no doubt 💪
