Liverpool could probably have done without the Merseyside derby being sandwiched in between the two legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City, if truth be told.
Even though they grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first leg against the champions-elect at an electric Anfield, Jurgen Klopp is not taking anything for granted going into the return fixture on Tuesday.
The German’s team selection was always going to give an idea of his priorities and his heavily rotated team – the second time in three derbies this season he has made major changes to keep his side fresh for challenges to come – indicates that he wants as many of his charges fit and firing for the trip to the Etihad as possible.
Danny Ings, Nathaniel Clyne and Ragnar Klavan are among the names who have been brought in from the cold. That might have proved a risk given how important the game is to the fans but they seem happy with the decisions.
