Liverpool have handed Chelsea a massive boost to their title ambitions with a poor result away to Sunderland.
A Jermain Defoe penalty double means the Reds start 2017 in a way they wouldn’t have liked, just days after ending 2016 in perfect fashion with a win against Manchester City.
Goalscoring hasn’t been a problem for Klopp’s side this season but again they’ve shipped too many goals at the back and now must wonder if they’ve been knocked out of the Premier League title race for good.
The draw means Chelsea can now move 8 points clear of the Anfield club if they win their match against Spurs on Wednesday night.
It was all going so well when Daniel Sturridge nodded home a poacher’s header to give them the lead at the Stadium of Light but Sunderland are fighting for their lives at the bottom of the table and were never going to give this one up without a fight.
Sadio Mane looked to have given the Reds victory with a 72nd minute goal but again Defoe was their to break hearts, slotting home his second penalty of the afternoon with just 6 minutes remaining.
It’s a result devastating to Liverpool fans who have seen their team pick up big results against elite clubs, before performing badly against the weaker teams in the division time and again.
Supporters took to Twitter to share their frustration and it wasn’t pretty…
Well done #LFC get the crucial points against City. To let them catch up one game later. Just awful. Need to do better.

Typical #LFC performance today. Everyone more nervous than the City game

So frustrating. After battling so hard to beat City, to put in a performance like that against Sunderland… Simply not good enough. #LFC

Typical Liverpool what's the need of beating City then drawing with Sunderland?? Mediocre

Liverpool dull. Once again poor after a great result against a big team. Mental strength nowhere to be found, awful mentality. #lfc

Liverpool not looking themselves today up at Sunderland. Solid David Moyes performance but felt Can, Mane, Firmino & Milner were all poor

What's the actual point in Liverpool! Win a big game on Saturday and play like that today???? ref was awful like but still????

Awful result for Liverpool. Sunderland played well in patches, but really have to question Jurgen Klopp's team selection there…
