Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Joel Matip will miss Wednesday's Champions League match against Spartak Moscow.

The defender was left out of the squad that claimed a 5-1 rout over Brighton on Saturday due to a muscular injury that he suffered in the previous game against Stoke City.

Matip will not recover in time to play at Anfield in midweek, but Klopp has denied reports that the 26-year-old is expected to be out of action for as long as a month.

Partly due to the defender's injury, the manager made a bold move at the weekend by playing a back three consisting of Dejan Lovren and midfield duo Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The surprise team selection coped as they earned a thumping victory at the Amex Stadium.

It remains unclear if Klopp will take another risk, but given that the Reds must avoid defeat against Spartak to qualify for the last 16 of the competition, the manager may play it safe.

Liverpool fans tweeted their thoughts on the news that Matip will miss the game.
