Many Liverpool fans have been reacting on social media to comments made by Pep Guardiola after Manchester City lost 3-1 at Anfield, in which the Sky Blues chief explained why his side were beaten.

The result opened a nine-point margin between the reigning Premier League champions and the title-hopeful Reds, with Manchester City also slipping to fourth in the standings after Leicester City and Chelsea entered the international break with victories.

Goals from Fabinho, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane ensured Liverpool maintained their unbeaten start to the season, but Guardiola noted after the game that it was the Reds' strength at set-pieces and ability to deliver incisive crosses that caused his Citizens side the most problems on Sunday.

"They are incredibly strong in set-pieces," the Spaniard told reporters, via quotes by ESPN's Melissa Reddy. "When you sit back and defend in the box, they open you up with [Trent] Alexander-Arnold and [Andrew] Robertson and start to make crosses.

"When they arrive with not just Mane, Salah, [Roberto] Firmino, but [Jordan] Henderson coming with the right tempo, [Georginio] Wijnaldum and the second balls, it’s almost impossible to live with that situation.

“When you are able to get back from that position, they have an incredible back four. And when you are attacking, like we tried, every mistake you can do - the transitions are the biggest quality of Jurgen [Klopp] from all of his career - like the situation with the second goal.

“You can't always win in life; it's important the way you live with the problems that we have, under pressure in a position against the best team, right now, in the world - it's about how we react."

No player delivered more crosses on Sunday for Liverpool than Alexander-Arnold, who made nine, but only two of those managed to find a teammate - the same amount as Robertson registered from his two attempted balls - per data collected by Sofa Score.

Kevin de Bruyne and Angelino were able to make 13 and nine deliveries respectively for City, on the other hand, and connected with teammates four times and once each as they also played a joint-game-high three key passes.
