Juventus have announced their squad for the group stages of the Champions League and the exclusion of a familiar face has saddened some Liverpool fans.
Emre Can is the man to miss out, and there is some sympathy for him from the Anfield faithful despite the German international moving to Turin after rejecting a new contract with the Reds.
A natural reaction could be to make fun out of the midfielder, but fans are choosing not to be vindictive and instead feel sorry for Can, who had clearly looked to join the Italian champions to further his career and opportunities in such competitions.
The Old Lady have failed to balance their squad efficiently over summer, and have now been left with seven first-team centre-midfielders – including Can – which could be the reason behind why he has had to miss out.
Some fans have used the opportunity to show their appreciation for the player, acknowledging the fact that he may have been poorly advised in his decision to leave.
Here are some of their responses to the news on Twitter.
i feel so sorry for emre.

I really feel sad for Emre, he was once our main man, he left Liverpool just to win the UCL and now he isn’t even listed in the squad to play.

Feel a bit sorry for Emre Can. Another poorly advised footballer who valued £££ over everything. He was never suited to a hard pressing 3 man midfield though, but you cannot question his talent, that goal at Watford ? and he was a big player for us in Kloppo’s early days.

Feel a bit sad for Emre. He could have stayed at Liverpool and clinched titles but now Juve don’t want him and I no longer find his hair gorgeous. https://t.co/BCB7B8OCfF
