Joel Matip’s Schalke team-mate Ralf Fahrmann believes that Liverpool are getting “one of the best centre-backs in Germany” this summer.
The Reds have already agreed a pre-contract deal with the Cameroonian defender, who will officially join Jurgen Klopp’s squad when his deal with the Gelsenkirchen side comes to an end.
Matip has been in impressive form for the Veltins-Arena outfit over the course of the past few seasons, earning widespread praise for his athleticism and reading of the game while making himself a regular in the Schalke XI.
And Fahrmann, speaking to The Set Pieces, has outlined his team-mate as “one of the best centre-backs in Germany”, claiming that he may even be on a par with Jerome Boateng, who many hail as the top name in his position in the Bundesliga:
“He’s our best player and one of the best centre-backs in Germany,
“I think Jerome Boateng is the best [centre-back] in the league but I think he [Matip] comes straight after or even level with him.”
“He’s one of the kindest people I’ve ever met in football. He’s always there for you, always willing to lend an ear,
“Even if I make a mistake, he’s willing to take the blame to support me. England can be very happy to have him in the Premier League.”
Matip will be Klopp’s first major addition since taking over at Liverpool, with January’s only signings being Serbian youngster, Marko Grujic, and emergency loanee, Steven Caulker.
