Just as it was threatening to enter the upper levels of the ‘summer transfer saga’ realm to sit down next to Sergio Ramos and Raheem Sterling’s Manchester United and Manchester City episodes and discuss the finer points of player power, Christian Benteke’s prospective move to Liverpool appears to be, thankfully, a foregone conclusion.
The Belgian looks set to join Brendan Rodgers’ Reds in a £32.5m deal after the Merseysiders finally relented and offered to match the release clause in his Aston Villa contract. Personal terms are likely to be agreed swiftly, and the 24-year-old is set to become the club’s second most expensive player – behind Andy Carroll.
But even though excitement should surely greet such a deal, many Kopites are fuming about Benteke’s imminent arrival. ‘He’s just a target man’, they scream, while calls of ‘look how badly Mario Balotelli has done in our system’ can also be heard, but the dissent should be thoroughly silenced by the stats…
As the numbers (crunched by Squawka) show, Benteke outscored all of the Reds’ main strikers from last season (The tally put forward by Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, Rickie Lambert and Balotelli (14) is only one more than the Villa man managed in the league last term ON HIS OWN). He also boasts a greater number of shots from inside the area, making up for Balotelli’s apparent greater level of accuracy!
Also, taking Benteke removes a nasty thorn from Liverpool’s side as, as shown below, he has a nasty habit of netting against the Merseysiders!
