Liverpool hoping to beat Chelsea to £20m attacker

Liverpool are keen to beat Chelsea to the signature of highly-rated Benfica attacker Lazar Markovic this summer, according to reports from the Sunday People.

The Serbian winger has established himself as one of Portuguese football’s top talents this term, and has been on the Blues wish list for some time.

But Brendan Rodgers is hopeful that he can beat the Merseysiders’ bitter rivals to the services of the 20-year-old, as he plans for the prospect of Champions League football.

The Northern Irishman is desperate to bolster his thin squad ahead of a European campaign, and is likely to have a large budget in order to do so.

Markovic is valued at around £20m, and a quick offer is expected once the transfer widow opens.

The youngster is known for his versatility in attacking positions, and has earned a fearsome reputation for his ability to cut in from wide and link up with his team-mates.

Rodgers sees him as an ideal fit at Anfield, and the sort of player he can use in tandem with the likes of Luis Suarez, Daniel Sturridge and Raheem Sterling to bolster his already effective forward line.
