Liverpool keen on Southampton star

Jay Rodriguez (Southampton)Liverpool are planning a move for Southampton forward Jay Rodriguez if Luis Suarez opts to leave Anfield in January, according to reports from The Mirror.

Despite claims from the player that he is now settled on Merseyside and keen to help the Reds book a spot in next season’s Champions League, the club are still fearful of a mega money offer from Real Madrid for the Uruguayan.

If Los Blanco do indeed bid in excess of £50m, Liverpool will find it hard to say no – especially with Suarez having a desire to join the Bernabeu giants.

As a result, Brendan Rodgers is already looking at potential replacements and is keen on Rodriguez.

The Saints striker is set to make his England debut in the Three Lions’ upcoming friendly ties after impressing for the South Coast side.

Rodgers believes that the 24-year-old can contribute to Liverpool’s attacking set-up and form a solid partnership with Daniel Sturridge.

It is likely that Southampton will demand a large fee for Rodriguez, who only joined the club last summer for £7m.

Arsenal are also keen on the hit-man, and may turn their attention to him if they are unable to complete a swoop for Luis Suarez or Karim Benzema.
