The Reds are believed to be set for a foray into the transfer market this January, with Brendan Rodgers keen to bolster his attacking options.
Hernandez – an international colleague of Luis Suarez – has emerged as one of their top targets, with news that the 23-year-old said to be unhappy with life in Serie A.
Arsenal were linked with a deadline day swoop for the South American, but a deal failed to materialise.
Since then their interest has cooled, leaving the door open for Liverpool.
Rodgers is keen to pair the powerful forward with Suarez, and is hopeful that a deal can be agreed for as little as £4m.
A move could also be instrumental in keeping the controversial striker at Anfield, with Hernandez known to be one of his close friends.
The Palermo ace is desperate to secure his spot in Uruguay’s World Cup squad next year, and has confessed that he is looking to leave Italy to do so:
“They (Palermo) know what I want and they know what they promised me. I don’t want to lose the chance of playing at the World Cup next summer.
“I think playing in Serie A is beautiful, but the desire to be at World Cup 2014 is what has pushed me to ask for a transfer.”
Should Liverpool move for Abel Hernandez?
