Liverpool are lining up a surprise move for Real Madrid left-back Fabio Coentrao, according to reports from Sport.
The Reds have enjoyed a fine summer of recruitment, addressing problems at the back with the additions of goalkeepers Loris Karius and Alex Manninger and centre-back duo Ragnar Klavan and Joel Matip, while Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum have been drafted in to add further potency in the attacking midfield zone.
However, one area Jurgen Klopp has not quite sorted yet is at left-back, which was exposed by an erratic performance from Alberto Moreno during the Merseysiders’ enthralling 4-3 win at Arsenal on Sunday.
However, reports from Sport (below) claim that Coentrao has emerged as a candidate to become Liverpool’s seventh summer signing, with a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer being weighed up for the left-sided ace.
The 28-year-old, who has been capped 51 times by Portugal and has lifted league titles in Spain and his homeland, is able to play at left-back or in a more advanced role on the same flank.
Real are understood to be open to the idea of letting their man go.
He spent last season on loan at Monaco, but failed to make a serious impact due, in part, to a hamstring injury suffered in April, which he is still sidelined with.
