Liverpool loan star in transfer limbo

Pepe Reina, Liverpool

Napoli have cooled suggestions they will sign Pepe Reina permanently from Liverpool at the end of the season, according to talkSPORT.

The Spaniard joined on a season long loan in the summer after Brendan Rodgers bought in Simon Mignolet from Sunderland for £9million.

Reina has enjoyed a decent start to life in Italy under his former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez, but the club’s sporting director Riccardo Bigon, is unsure whether the club will be making the loan move permanent.

“Will Reina stay? At the end of the year he will return to Liverpool,” Bigon told Mediaset.

“In life you can re-examine everything, but to date Reina is a player of Liverpool. It’s too early to talk about it – at that moment we could only take him on loan.

“When [former Roma¬†goalkeeper] Morgan De Sanctis expressed the idea of choosing another team we tried Rafael as first-choice goalkeeper. The Brazilian will be the future of the club in that role. We chose Reina because Rafa Benitez knew him well.”

Liverpool are likely to sell Reina next summer, whether it be to Napoli or another team.

Spanish giants Barcelona have held a long standing interest, and may be in the hunt for a new goalkeeper next summer.

Reina enjoyed an eight year spell at Anfield, in which he won the FA Cup and League Cup, while also finishing runner up in the Champions League and Premier League.
